Half of the manor in Berkenele is a historical monument of national significance, known as the childhood place of the famous Latvian writer and public figure Jānis Rainis (1865 – 1929). From 1872 to 1881, Rainis’ father – Krišjānis Pliekšāns was a tenant of the Berkenhagen manor – so was called Berkenele in the past. For nine years, Berkenele was the home of the future poet Jānis Rainis. Over the years, the house of J. Rainis in Berkenele has become a significant cultural center, where creative meetings, annual poetry days, Līgo festival, Plein-airs, and exhibitions of professional artists are taking place.
