Making the distance from Riga to the Latgale region, you can travel by renting a car (rental services from companies Bolt, Sixt, and others are available) or using public transport. You can take a passenger train (visit the website vivi.lv or use the mobile app “ViVi Latvija”) or travel by bus, with available routes listed at 1188. lv.
While in Latgale, you can travel between cities using regional transport or a rental car. Rental cars are available in the city of Rēzekne (SIA “Rent WTBL” +371 26 149 171) and the city of Daugavpils (SIA “Alsi D”, alsiauto. lv; Bolt.eu).
Safe travel
Latvia and Latgale has four distinct seasons with a relatively stable climate. In the summer (from June to August), temperatures can reach up to +30°C, while in winter (from November to March), they can drop to as low as -30°C. Autumn and spring may bring prolonged rain or flooding, but these do not pose a significant threat.
Yes, Latgale region borders with Russia and Belarus, but we assure that it is safe to be here. Latvia has been a member of NATO and the EU since 2004. The overall crime and theft rates are low.
Despite the region being safe, due to the international geopolitical situation, special border area tourism permits are currently not being issued and the State Border Guard advises travelers near the border to always carry an identification document (passport or ID card). It is permitted to stay within the territories of towns or villages and on state roads.
