Museum was founded in 1954. The permanent exhibition gives insights into several Vilanu city and municipality historical stages, and local residents’ daily routine from ancient times till nowadays. Museum’s collection mostly consists of archaeological, ethnographic, and numismatic items.
In the museum’s collection can also be found rare and unique items, for example, there are only about 30 mammoth teeth in Latvia, one of them in the Vilani Local history museum.

Museum offers excursion “Vilanu historical path”, which introduces with Vilani main cultural heritage places and objects. In the exhibition hall permanently can be viewed local and guests art and craftsman works and various thematic exhibitions.

Pedagogical programs:
“Ancient Latvian strength signs” (1.–12. class, duration 40-60 min, languages: LV, RUS)
The program gives insights into Latvian strength signs, explains their graphic symbols and ancient Latvian deities as well.

“Linseed story” (1.–12. class, duration 40-60 min, languages: LV, RUS)
Based on a permanent exhibition “Linseed story”, a program gives a wider understanding of linen growing and processing.
