The congregation was established in 1920. As a congregation grew and became more active, there was a need for its own church. Foundation stone of Kārsava Evangelic Lutheran church was laid in 1939. At that time about 300-400 members of the congregation operated in the church.

The Second World War had a major impact on Kārsava Lutheran Church. A large part of the church members were wealthy people, owners of large farms, thus, many were sent to Siberia or moved abroad as refugees. The number of church members dropped significantly. During the Soviet era, the church was forfeited from a congregation and in 1965 the congregation was forced to stop its activities.
The church awaited painful fate. A cross was removed from the tower, with a rope and a bulldozer the church tower was demolished, the altar was destroyed and the church windows were blocked. In the church premises cinema – “Spartaks”, started its work.

The Kārsava Lutheran Church re-started its activities in the ’80s. Officially the church was restored and registered in 1991. Following the persistent requests of church members, in 1991 the congregation managed to regain its ownership for the church premises.
