“World War I Museum” is a new tourist attraction for those interested in history and the opportunity to explore scenes from the past. Throughout the museum, there is a narrative about how any war is senseless and the destruction it brings. The museum serves as a reminder and teaches us not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

During the First World War, the front line was located in the territory of Latvia and Lithuania for several years. On both sides, a complex system of fortifications with trenches, bunkers, and installations was built. Until the present day, many concrete bunkers built by German soldiers, impressive artillery emplacements, and ammunition depots, as well as endless trench networks, have been preserved.

Museum visitors are first introduced to the history of Medumi to show that life thrived here even before the war, and Medumi was a developed corner of Latvia. Here, people of various nationalities lived amicably, caring for their households and well-being. However, strangers arrived with weapons and devastated everything, driving people from their homes. In the second hall, visitors can familiarize themselves with the hardships of wartime, the appearance of the front line, what soldiers ate, how they rested, and what their daily life was like. Let’s allow them to feel that atmosphere.

One of the most emotionally impactful parts of the exhibition is the section featuring an imitation of a Russian army bunker. The German bunkers were constructed of reinforced concrete and are still visible, but the Russian bunkers were made of wood and have not been preserved. Therefore, in the museum, we offer the opportunity to experience being inside Russian trenches and dugouts, to see, hear, and feel that atmosphere.
