Cycling route on the Latvian-Belarusian borderland (No. 789)
The route starts behind Kraslava, turning right from the A6 (Riga – Belarusian border) highway and following the marking of the cycling route. The length of the route is 27 km and it covers 3 parishes.
The route starts in Kraslava parish, moves through Kalnieši parish, and ends in Piedruja parish, including the most important sights. It is also worth visiting the most remarkable places of Kraslava: the Castle complex of Counts Platers, the Roman Catholic church of St. Ludwig, the Karnicki monument, the Observation Tower in Priedaine, and others.
The cycling route mostly leads along forest, country, and gravel roads, crossing the Indrica River, where there is a scenic view of the surrounding nature. There is also a recreation area. But approx. 3.5 km before the Indrica River is a great opportunity to visit the oldest wooden church in Latgale – the Indrica Roman Catholic Church. From the Indrica River to the next recreation area, located on Lake Koloda, you have to drive approx. 8 km.
Piedruja parish holds architectural gems such as Piedruja Roman Catholic Church and Piedruja Orthodox Church. It is also worth visiting the unique Stone of Daugava and, by prior arrangement, the Museum of Piedruja. Not far from the center of Piedruja is located the hotel “Piedruja”, which offers both accommodation and catering services.
At the destination of the cycling route, where the most beautiful view of the bank of the Daugava River as well as the Belarusian townlet Druja opens, there is another recreation area, which is special with the architectural wooden forms installed there.
