The Akmeņupe river nature trail is created in a tributary of the right bank of the Dviete river – in the Akmeņupe river valley. Here you can get acquainted with the diversity of nature on the territory of the protected natural landscape “Augšzeme” (the “Highland”) – geological formations, forest, and meadow plants, meet wild animals, etc. While walking along the trail, you can see steep slopes and cliffs covered with deciduous forest, springs with crystal clear water. Akmeņupe valley is beautiful at all times of the year, and every turn of the river opens a different view – a unique landscape. Especially relaxing is the murmur of water, which sounds different in every recreation place.
The trail was created in 1998 and the purpose of its creation is to introduce visitors to the diversity of nature in Augšzeme and the need to preserve it. The visitor can walk along the 1 km Akmeņupe nature trail, get acquainted with the characteristic landscapes of the Akmeņupe valley, geological formations, forest, and meadow, or swampy plants, birds, and wild animals. The river with a fast current, and its name – Akmeņupe – confirms that the entire bottom of the river is covered with stones of different sizes. A diligent history researcher may try to find a stone with an inscription that indicates that there was a front line of World War I.
The hiking trail сreated on the banks of the river is beautiful at all times of the year with its changing landscape. In spring, the banks of a fast-flowing river have a blue color because blue liverworts bloom around them, then white, and yellow. In summer, the eye is pleased with bluebells, and the river becomes completely calm.
It is allowed to build a fire, have a picnic, and spend the night in tents in recreation places.
