Hiking trail in Latgale, which is suitable both – for families and active recreation lovers. A nature trail leads along the ravine where you can see 3-4 m high sandstone outcrops. There are about 60 species of plants in this area. Stiglova Ravine is a geological monument of nature (specially protected area). Sandstones were formed under the influence of water currents in shallow sea conditions ~375 million years ago.

Here, under the influence of sea currents, white and red-brown Devonian sandstones were formed. In the valley formed by the waters from the melting of glaciers, with a significant ravine and steep slopes, the valley of the Stiglova River found its place. Here you can also find a 4 meters deep cave, and on the left bank of the river, on the earth’s surface, you can see the Stiglova boulder. In any case – make sure to observe the sandstone outcrops on the slopes of the Stiglova river’s ravine as it is very beautiful!

This place is special not only because of its picturesque landscape, iron-rich springs, or the title of a geological site awarded in 2013 but also because of its geological origin. This is one of the few places in the easternmost part of Latvia where the Ogre formation rocks are exposed.

Offer:

  • parking, information stands, a place for a fire and rest, dry toilet;
  • average difficulty/difficult trail;
  • not suitable for cyclists, people with disabilities, or visitors with prams;
  • available all year round.
