The First Catholic wooden church in Līvāni was built in 1678, it was done by Polish tycoon Leonard Pocija funds. In 1685 church was consecrated by Bishop M. Poplavskis. Already then Līvāni congregation had their own deacon, which was a rare thing back then in Latgale region.

In 1758 by the support of the congregation new wooden church was built, it was located in the same place, as the present church. The church was consecrated by auxiliary bishop Jānis Benislavskis. After the consecration church was served by temporal priests, as it had large land properties, given by L. Pocija. In 1828 Līvānu deacon Ambrozevičs Caragrodas in present Jersika manor builds masonry chapel for the glory of the Holy Mary Magdalene, which in 1930 became congregation church for Madaļeņas congregation. Nowadays three-story masonry church was build in 1861, in 1936 new organs were installed, as well as artist Schoenberg’s painting “St. John the Baptist” and 14 paintings of Road to the Cross.
